Boys Varsity Cross Country, Girls Varsity Cross Country · Boys XC Team Sends 3 Individuals to State Championship

The Big Lake Boys Cross-Country team finished their season on Thursday at the Princeton Golf Course with the Section 7AA Championships. The section meets has 16 teams that ran in 4-4 team mini meets throughout the day at the course. In the end all the times were melded together into the full results. The top 2 teams and 8 individuals, not on the top 2 teams, earn a trip to the State Championship. Due to Covid, the state meet will not take place this year, but that didn’t stop the Hornets from having a great day. Kade Layton finished 3rd overall battling with several Andover runners till the very end. Owen Layton finished 8th and qualified for the state meet for the second time. Christian Noble 14th and added a state entrant in cross-country to his trophy case that already includes an individual state wrestling title. Jack Leuer continues to impress as an 8th grader who just keeps getting faster with every race and finished in 21st. David Guyse stepped up again, as he did in the conference race, to finish in 27th. And Senior Jayden McLearen wrapped up his senior season with his best run of the year for 35th. Spencer Vold has been battling a knee injury and was unable to finish, but his contributions to the team all through the season helped make this a season to remember for the Hornets. The boys team finished in 4th place, one of Big Lake’s highest finishes ever in the Section. “It is not often you have three state qualifiers from the same team. I am so proud of what this team has done this year. We ran a very good race on this course 2 weeks ago under perfect conditions. We returned today with the course being softer, the temperature much colder and a strong wind blowing and everyone on the team ran faster today. That’s all you can ask. It’s unfortunate for our three boys that there is not state meet this year, but we were glad for the opportunity to compete.
