Boys Varsity Cross Country, Girls Varsity Cross Country · Hornets Run at Liberty Trails for Final Home Meet of Season

The Big Lake XC team ran through the warm and windy trails at Liberty Elementary this afternoon. They played host the Becker Bulldogs and the North Branch Vikings. The increased temperatures didn’t seem to phase the Hornets as most improved their times greatly over the same course from two weeks ago. “It is very hard to compare times from course to course in cross-country,” Coach Trutna explained. “Courses are rarely exactly the described distance and the terrain and course conditions play a huge role in times. It is rare that you get to run on the exact same course twice in a cross-country season. Over 90% of our kids ran faster under tougher conditions than two weeks ago, some by more than a minute!”
Campbell Slattery won another middle school girl’s race and Kristen Dickson finished 5th to lead the Hornets to the team championship.
With Jack Leuer running on varsity, Gavin Vold took over the lead MS position and finished 7th with Trent Erickson also finishing in the top 10.
The boys’ JV team won the team title with great runs from Carter Erickson (2nd), Tre’ Gordy (3rd), Matthew Denzen (4th), and Jacob Polacec (5th).
The girls’ JV was took second as a team. They were lead by Sophia Tienter (5th), Rylie Ostrom(6), Morgan Czech(7th), and Samanth Burton(10th).
The Big Lake duo of Josephine Lentz(2nd) and Emilee Doperalski(3rd) continue to lead a resurgent girls’ team to their closest finish with Becker in years.
The boys’ varsity came out on top at this meet and were crowned team champions. It was another 1-2-3 overall finish for Kade Layton, Owen Layton, and Christian Noble.
“Both our varsity teams had great second halves of their races. Our runners went out under control and moved up throughout the race, it is a recipe to fast times and great finishes.”
